Recently pip mentioned there’s an F1 in Australia and he’s seen it. Well, it occurred to me that such a fabled car has !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and I can look it up.

The registry had this photo. I know where this is - this is Richmond station, not 5km from my house. Eerily close to where I took a sunrise pic !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

I recently posted about your !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Well, the McLaren F1 tops my list, and the thought that it was every this close to my home actually makes me feel queasy and giggly all at once. If I’d been taking this photo my legs would have stopped working.

Man that car is just the ultimate for me. Nothing will ever top it.

Best and only! Except I suspect this happened years ago. None of the cars in that shot are newer than about 2010 though it’s hard to date it.

Unless you mean me finding that photo. And given the low, low bar of F1 events in Aus this year, you’re still probably right!

I won’t say that nothing will ever top it... because it is always possible for a new gestalt shift the way the F1 was in 1993...

But it would take another throw-out-the-rulebook, singular vision, game changer, and at this point... that will likely be more of a technology jump , than the engineering leap forward that F1 was.

just imagine of you were behind it, and your brakes failed.

The game has changed now, which does sort of cement the F1's position at the top of its game. The leaps forward now are different, hybrid and the like.

Though that new V12 Gordon Murray 3-pedal fan car might be good.

It boggles the mind. Your insurance would weep tears.

The F1 would go back to Woking for repairs, all thanks to you.

Agreed... F1 will never be diminished, and will always be a waypoint where automotive history changed.

I think we are saying the same thing, though, that it could change again, but on a different aspect.

Frankly, while I don’t dismiss the possibility of batteries becoming far better, I still like the idea of hybrid drive, despite it’s added complexity, because that complexity serves versatility.

Ferrari SP90 will be very interesting, and arguably it may succeed where the less powerful i8, and the less fundamentally hybrid optimized Acura NSX have not. i8 was too mild for it’s pricetag, and conversely not affordable enough for it’s mainstream power level to be considered a mainstream car.

NSX is a V6-Twin Turbo 9-speed gearbox supercar. Without electric motors, that car would be basically be a luxury alternative to a Ford GT... and remain a functional car. The electric driveline aspects are added on.

Arguably the SP90 may also be functional (and just be a F8 Tributo) without the electrical aspects... but the electric drivetrain being utilized for reverse “gear”, and being able to propel the car in electric mode only, it seems to be getting closer to a true Series-Parallel multi-mode hybrid drive.

Koeniggsegg Gemera and Regera are arguably where things should be headed... with true delegation of drive modes to do what they each do best... electric for torque and variable speeds, and efficient energy conversion, then fueled ICE for high power output, electrical generation, and high speed kinetic direct drive where electrical efficiency falls off due to heat and current supply and demand.

We probably are saying the same thing :)

Certainly hybrid or full-electric approaches are better, with few of the deficiencies that plague the ICE. The McLaren in truth isn only the top of its game given the many constraints inherent in its design.

It’s like how the finest vinyl record player in the world will still be eclipsed by a decent CD player.

But we like the game the McLaren ran in so we’ll always hold it in high regard and that’s fine.

You’re right, the Koenigsegg with its heavy dependence on the electricity doing what it does best, is probably closer to the future.
